Depending on the spice and country, the production of spices itself faces labor issues and environmental challenges like uncontrolled pesticide use and poor wastewater management. Most household branded spices are years old(!), lacking flavor and freshness. This is just part of the reason why finding the right flavors to spice up dishes can feel overwhelming and tiresome.
We source our spices from Burlap & Barrel, a spice company that is working towards ending inequality and exploitation in food systems that so often disenfranchise skilled farmers. They source spices directly from farmer cooperatives and small farms, bypassing brokers and middlemen who drive prices up and quality down. They spend time with farmers, learning firsthand about the economic, social, and cultural factors behind their farming methods, and support them to improve the quality, quantity, and value of their products.
Local Roots meat is handled with care and you can taste it. There are no preservatives, nitrates or funky chemicals. It's super fresh.
