How Do Subscriptions Work?

We want cooking to be easy, so we've made this spice blend with your seasonal Local Roots bounty in mind. Wild Mountain Cumin brings a perfect balance to Cured Sumac and Silk Chili. Mildly smoky in flavor with a light kick in the end, it’s all you need to roast your veggies, chicken, or white fish. Dust it over a flatbread, sprinkle it on top of hummus, or add a dash to your sauteed greens.

The Problem

Millions of smallholder farmers are involved in the production of spices, and many of them face poverty and food insecurity. Depending on the spice and country, the production of spices itself faces labor issues and environmental issues – such as uncontrolled pesticide use and poor wastewater management. Most household branded spices are years old, lacking flavor and freshness. Finding the right flavors to spice up dishes can feel overwhelming and tiresome. 

 

Our Food Fix

We source our spices from Burlap & Barrel, a spice company that is working towards ending inequality and exploitation in food systems that disenfranchise skilled farmers. They source their spices directly from farmer cooperatives and small farms, bypassing brokers and middlemen who drive prices up and quality down. They visit farms and spend time with farmers, learning firsthand about the economic, social and cultural factors behind their farming methods, and we support them to improve the quality, quantity, and value of their products.
