Donating to the Black Lives Matter Movement
Dear fam,Our community is everything, and as fellow NYers, the crew at Local Roots wants to give you all a hug right now. We love you all so much.
We stand in solidarity with the communities who are challenging systemic injustices and fighting for change. We have always believed in produce to the people, and power to the people. We want to be the change we want to see – and for that reason, we will be donating proceeds to Communities for United Police Reform. There is so much work to be done and this is just a drop in the bucket, but every drop amounts to something large.
Many people have asked us in the past 9 years why we aren't a non profit. It's because I have always thought it was important to show that businesses can change the world. As a small business, we have the ability to react quickly and hope that larger corporations will follow. Every business, large and small, and every individual has a voice and power. Together, we can make the change we want to see in this world.

What is Communities United for Police Reform?
CPR is a campaign to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, bringing together a movement of community members, lawyers, researchers and activists to work for change. They are in the courts fighting to hold police accountable for violating New Yorkers' constitutional rights. CPR IS training communities to know their rights and to observe and document police abuse.
How Local Roots is taking action
Portion of proceeds will be donated from Summer Bundles ordered by Sunday, June 7.
Our bundles are everything you need for the week and a 5% discount from individual subscriptions. We work with small family farms that practice sustainable agriculture.
100% of the profits from our LR mesh totes will be donated for orders placed by Sunday, June 7.
Local Roots totes are made by a female owned small business that donates to the Global Fund for Women and has partnered with an all female sewing cooperative in Juarez to provide the community a steady income.
How to take action
Civil Rights Law 50a is a police secrecy law that is routinely used to shield police misconduct and failed police disciplinary processes from the public. Use this script to call on your council members to commit to voting no on the current budget, and significantly defunding the NYPD, before June 23rd: https://www.tinyurl.com/repeal50a
The Museum of Food and Drink has put together a list of resources amplifying black chefs and food producers, black-owned businesses, and organizations helping the food insecure during protests and COVID-19. Do your part, support where you can!
Show up for the protests and silent vigils taking place all over the city. Visit @justiceforgeorgenyc for updates on where they’re taking place.
If you can, donate to Black Lives Matter, Community Bail Funds and organizations fighting to end systemic racism.
