Community Pot Luck: Dispatch From The Border

February 01, 2019

Learn how a Local Roots member helped to serve high quality, sustainably sourced and cultural hot meals to migrants at the Tijuana border.

Betty Feibusch has been a Local Roots member since the beginning. She recently spent New Years Eve serving food to Central American migrants in a dark warehouse encampment at the Tijuana border.

Because February is Local Roots NYC's month to Share The Food Love, we're inviting you to learn about Betty's moving experience and to find out how you can contribute to the cause.

What we'll do:

Bring a dish or drink to Betty's Boerum Hill home (preferably using Local Roots produce though not necessary). If need be, you can reheat using her kitchen. After settling in with some tasty food + beverages, Betty will talk about her experience and show us photos. You'll be able to ask questions and find out how you can also get involved.

We'll end this community potluck brunch with a social hour making new friends and connecting over food.

Get a glimpse of the event with Betty's note below:

"It was one of the most profound and humbling experiences in my life. When I started reading about the caravans forming in Central America, I knew I wanted to be there. I knew I needed to be there as the daughter of an immigrant mother who crossed the Atlantic at the beginning of the last century, traveling with 3 siblings and no adults.

I ended up volunteering with World Central Kitchen, part of a massive operation to produce and serve over 3,000 high quality, sustainably sourced and cultural hot meals. World Central Kitchen believes that “Food is culture...food is family...food is hope” #chefsforthepeople. This is the same organization that fed Puerto Rico and is currently feeding federal workers."

This event is open to Local Roots Members and Non-Members.
