Produce Spotlight: Gooseberries

July 19, 2019

Why are gooseberries so hard to find? It all comes down to a federal band put in place in 1911. These plants, in addition to currants, served as an intermediary host of white pine blister rust but the ban was lifted in the 60s thanks to the development of new disease-resistant plant varietals.  Currently, almost all states allow farmers and home gardeners to grow these plants. This makes gooseberries found in the Local Roots fruit subscription even more badass.

Gooseberries boast a low amount of calories while providing nearly half your daily requirement of vitamin C, around a quarter of your dietary fiber needs, plus a large dose of vitamin A and manganese.

Enjoy your berries as a snack, or try making a gooseberry crumble, gooseberry ketchup, or even a chutney! Recipes found here.
