We need to change the way we farm. While estimates vary, as much as 20-40% of historic “human-source” CO2 emissions came from agricultural mistakes such as excessive tillage. One leading NGO recently estimated that between 47-53% of current “human source” greenhouse gases are attributable to current food production and distribution systems. FAO scientists have estimated that topsoil is suffering such rapid destruction that the world has only about 60 harvests of food left before global production collapses. Farmers and ranchers around the world are struggling to coax yields out of nutritionally depleted soils, and there is a horrifying increase in the incidence of farmer suicides. Modern foods often have only a fraction of the nutritional value they once delivered, and biodiversity loss associated with industrial agriculture is causing what some are calling the Sixth Mass Extinction. Regenerative agriculture, conversely, can rapidly rebuild topsoil, improve soil fertility, increase farmer and rancher yields, create greater farm profitability, and help rebuild the soil’s capacity to store water for use during climate extremes. Most of all, regenerative agriculture converts farms from carbon sources to carbon sinks, reducing greenhouse gas concentrations by drawing down carbon back into the earth. If enough farmers convert to regenerative agriculture, we may even begin to experience “negative emissions” and possibly reverse climate change.
