Most pumpkins and pumpkin seeds are grown China and India. The pumpkins are grown on conventional farms that use unhealthy growing practices, including the use of pesticides. One harvested, the seeds are given additives to extend shelf life and sustain long travel times. They're also overly processed, which can strip the seeds of their natural vitamins and minerals.
StonyBrook Farms uses local pumpkins, grown in the Finger Lakes region of NY, for their pepitas. They're one of just a few US producers using domestically grown seeds for their products. To maintain peak flavor and nutrients, they dry roast their seeds in small batches at low temperatures. They're proud that their seeds are loaded with Vitamin E, zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, omega 3 and omega 9 oils, lutein and beta carotene.
